An advisory issued by the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center says that scareware rogue anti-virus programs have earned more than $150 million for the organized cyber syndicates that operate them.

An enormous range of variants on the basic scam have appeared in recent months, aimed, according to SC Magazine, at foiling the standard signature-based anti-virus programs. Rather than pursue their usual hosting options - fly-by-night ISPs with little or no security vetting - cyber criminals are purchasing blocks of IPv4 addresses from which to operate, according to a report from Kaspersky Labs.

The report, which was released by the anti-virus software maker just before Christmas, says that online crooks are taking advantage of the fact that just five organizations control the Regional Internet Registries that allocate such blocks of IPv4 addresses. Ars Technica writes that the RIRs frequently have difficulty ascertaining whether a block request comes from a legitimate institution.
